New Assembly funding for breast cancer patients

Rosemary Butler has warmly welcomed a decision by Health Minister Edwina Hart to provide NHS funding for all women requiring additional prostheses for swimming and sports activities following breast surgery.

Mrs Butler raised the issue with the Minister after an approach by a constituent. She has been told in a letter from Mrs Hart that from now on, as well as free 'everyday' breast prostheses for mastectomy patients with replacements after two years in the event of damage or weight loss, women will also be able to apply for special lightweight prostheses if they want to go swimming or take part in sports activities.

"It is very important that women who have experienced breast surgery and who want to take exercise as part of their rehabilitation programme, shouldn't feel embarrassed or restricted in any way," she said.

"I am sure this new policy will be welcomed by breast surgery patients all over Wales. There is always a danger that women can feel alienated once their treatment has been carried out, and this move will  inevitably help to restore their confidence and sense of well being."
