Support for Newport Welsh Bacc project

Newport West AM, Rosemary Butler, has welcomed the news that sixth formers in eight Newport Comprehensive Schools will be able to take part in the new Welsh Baccalaureate qualification, and will be among the first to do so in Wales.

Mrs Butler said: "Five schools in my constituency will now become part of a network of schools in Newport offering a broader qualification than the traditional A-level. This will help them in their search for University places and jobs.

"The Assembly Government is transforming Sixth Form learning in Wales, offering higher standards of achievement and motivation for young people.

"The Welsh Bacc will produce students with better skills and a wider knowledge of the world."

Welsh Bacc students will study a language module, subjects relating to Wales, Europe and the world, a research project, work experience and voluntary work in the community. They'll also be able to take existing qualifications such as A levels.

Tuesday, February 13

(The Welsh Bacc will be offered to all Sixth Form students in Bassaleg Comprehensive School, Bettws Comprehensive School, Caerleon Comprehensive School, Duffryn Comprehensive School, Hartridge Comprehensive School, Lliswerry Comprehensive School, St Josephs Comprehensive School, St Julians Comprehensive School, from September this year.)
