Rosemary
Butler, the AM for Newport West has described the extra money for schools, which is now
part of the Assemblys budget, as excellent news.
It means that more than £225,000
in extra funding has been found for primary and secondary schools in Newport West next
year, along with additional sums for special needs and nursery schools. The new money for
the Assembly from Gordon Brown means that the largest primary schools in the area should
now be getting an extra £7,900 each to spend on teaching and buildings, and the four
largest comprehensive schools in the area will each be getting £16,200.
Newport schools are already
excellent, but theres always more to do, she said. This budget shows that
the Assembly is committed to improving the lives of children, particularly those with
special needs.
The budget means that an extra £11m has been found
for schools in Wales, £9.6m of it for mainstream funding. There will also be £1000 for
every primary school and £2,000 for every secondary school, to help with energy costs.
