Special needs children to get priority

Newport West AM Rosemary Butler has welcomed  a decision by the Assembly Government to make use of new lawmaking powers in a bid to help children with special educational needs. It's the first of several new measures which are due to appear shortly.

There are now plans to make assessment procedures  more consistent, and give parents the right of appeal against decisions which they feel are unfair.

Rosemary Butler said:

"These new measures would be very much in keeping with the views of the Newport based "Parents for Change" who have approached me in the past.

"Parents frequently have to fight hard to get the right education for their children. Pupils in Newport with dyslexia, autism, hyperactive or attention disorders are all going to benefit from a simpler and more consistent assessment system.

''These revised procedures are badly needed and I welcome the fact that they are at the top of the list of new laws planned by the Assembly Government."
