Pupils at St Joseph's High School in Newport are helping to build a greener, cleaner, more environmentally friendly future said local AM Rosemary Butler when she heard that they had won a prestigious Eco School award ” The Eco-School programme plays a vital role in helping young people make a major contribution to Assembly Government priorities on tackling climate change and reducing waste. Rosemary Butler said : ‘'I want to congratulate the pupils and staff at St Joseph's on their hard work in winning this award. The eco-schools scheme is leading the way on tackling climate change, with pupils in schools like St Josephs getting together to assess the impact they're making on the environment and climate, and working out ways they can change. ‘'Tree planting, growing organic vegetables and setting targets to increase the number of pupils walking to school are just some of the ideas pupils have come up with in Eco-Schools."
