New safety measures for M4 called for

Rosemary Butler, the Newport West AM, said that a very serious review of safety measures was required on the motorway north of Newport following yet another closure due to an accident.

She said there were a number of approaches which could be considered.

"I would like to see a more effective style of crash barrier on this stretch of road.Several of the recent accidents have led to vehicles causing the closure of lanes in both directions.

"I would also like to see distance markers and speed display systems. Distance markers painted onto the surface of motorways have been shown to reduce accidents by about 50%.

"And I think serious thought has to be given to new technology which would prevent joyriders and absent minded drivers from going up slip roads in the wrong direction. I believe there are ways of doing this."
