Ryder Cup spin off helps Newport golfers

A new golfing facility for juniors at Caerleon Golf Club is one of the many benefits for Newport now that the Ryder Cup is being held at the Celtic Manor in 2010, according to First Minister Rhodri Morgan.

Answering a question from Rosemary Butler, AM for Newport West, about the new nine hole course at Caerleon, Mr Morgan said that the run up to the Ryder Cup and the ten to twenty year period afterwards would be good for the City of Newport and surrounding areas.

"It will put Newport on the map like nothing else that you can imagine," he said. "It will also be good for Wales as a whole."

Mrs Butler had invited other AMs to come and see for themselves how the Ryder Cup was benefiting places like Caerleon in her constituency.

The new nine hole course which is three miles from the Ryder Cup course is benefiting from a £120,000 Welsh Assembly grant which was announced in November 2006, as part of Ryder Cup Wales Legacy Fund scheme.
