Free admission to Heritage sites

Cadw, the Welsh  Assembly's historic environment service, will allow free entry for visitors to the Roman Baths at Caerleon on March 1st, to help celebrate St David's Day. There are similar arrangements for Cadw sites all over Wales.

But Newport West AM, Rosemary Butler, doesn't want the free entry service to stop there.

Mrs Butler  said:

" I am delighted with this move. I love the Roman baths, and it is an essential part of the visit when people come to Caerleon to find out more about our Roman past.

"As March 1st falls on a Saturday, it is an ideal time to mark the day by visiting our historic attractions.

"There are plans however, under the coalition agreement between Labour and Plaid Cymru, to extend free admission to heritage sites for children and Welsh pensioners throughout the year.

"I would like to see this happen as quickly as possible, and I would go even further and suggest that all visitors to Cadw sites should eventually be given free access. After all there's already free admission to the National Museums and Galleries of Wales, including the Roman Legionary Museum at Caerleon."
