Rosemary Butler presses for further green measures at schools

Newport West AM Rosemary Butler has been pressing First Minister Rhodri Morgan to make sure that school transport in Wales uses bio-diesel fuels.Mr Morgan recently  opened the newly rebuilt Rogerstone Primary School in Newport and praised Newport City Council for building it in an environmentally friendly way.

At First Minister's Questions today Mrs Butler agreed with his comments, but went on to urge the First Minister to make schools environmentally friendly in other ways as well. She wanted to see more safe routes to schools so that children would be encouraged to walk and cycle. She also raised the question of fuel used by school buses.

"Would you consider introducing regulations to ensure that school transport in Wales uses bio-diesel fuel", she asked.

"You're right perhaps to make that the third arm of any policy to reduce the carbon footprint of schools", he replied."Perhaps we should be looking at that as well."
