Move to tackle flytipping with cameras welcomed

Rosemary Butler has welcomed a new initiative by Newport City Council to monitor flytipping blackspots with CCTV cameras.

Flytipping was one of the major concerns raised at a conference on waste management which she organised in the constituency in November.

The conference was told that local authorities in Wales deal with nearly 4,000 fly tipping incidents a month, and that higher penalties are now being imposed.

"The enforcement of penalties is a key element in the battle against flytipping." said Mrs Butler.I would welcome any move to stop these thoroughly irresponsible people from creating eyesores with their rubbish

"They cost the taxpayer a fortune and create a dreadful image at a time when we are trying to attract investment and tourism. It's a pity it has to be done, but if CCTV  cameras help to catch the culprits, then I'm all for the scheme."
