Free bus passes for the elderly and disabled in Newport is proving to be a great success says Newport West AM Rosemary Butler. The latest figures show that 33,767 people over the age of sixty can now travel free in and around the city, along with 2,600 disabled people. The Welsh Assembly is now expected to spend more than £500m on transport in Wales this year compared to £200m in 2000. "Because of the bus passes and the money being spent on updating the railway station and roads in Newport, the Assembly is making a tremendous difference to travelling conditions in Newport", said Mrs Butler. "One of the encouraging things is that Newport Transport has been able to upgrade and renew its vehicles."
